Up until recently, good vegan ice cream was very difficult to come by in Taipei. Surprisingly nobody was creating what should have been a highly sought after commodity in one of the most vegan friendly cities on the planet.
Occasionally while shuffling past the supermarket freezers I would take a peak to see if the almond-milk Ben & Jerry’s had reached these shores yet, but always ended up slinking away feeling disappointed.
That disappointed was tempered when Nice Cream opened. Nice Cream don’t have any gimmicky flavours like Rocky Road or Lumps of This or That, and they don’t need it. What Nice Cream did bring to the masses is high quality, plant based, authentic Italian Gelato.
The owners, Mirko and Patty, offer around eight rotating flavours every day usually with a good mix of some delicious natural fruit flavours (using real fruit and low sugar) with some classics like peanut, chocolate and coconut. When the season is right you’ll also find specials like Mango for summer time.
Unlike some other vegan ice creams we’ve tried, Nice Cream have the creamy gelato texture down and they serve it at the perfect point where its not ridiculously soft and isn’t so hard that the spoon almost breaks. This is the kind of perfection that you get when you’ve had 100 years of gelato making experience passed down.
Now that the summer has arrived in Taiwan this place should be an essential on any vegan-in-Taiwan survival guide.
Nice Cream are open until 10pm every night so are a perfect date-night dessert spot. Try the Mango, Chocolate and Peanut (our favourites). For the more adventurous, try the new Olive Oil flavour (not a joke.)
